Student Portfolios

Creating the future, without fear.

// week of April 23rd //

This week we took a field trip to the New Museum on the Bowery. We enjoyed a beautiful day, played in the park, ate lunch outdoors and got to see some fantastic art on the topic of identity.

Model UN Conference 2018!

Last week some of our Middle School and Upper El students had another great experience at MMUN! Check out the gallery of photos provided by students, parents and teachers, recapping their amazing experience.

Design A Game!

With half of our middle school crew in the city at MMUN this week, we decided to mix it up by giving our students a design challenge. In half a day's time, this team conceptualized & designed a prototype of a game playable by students age 8 and up. Here were their constraints:

  • must be a physical game (board, mat, card, etc)
  • must be playable by students age 8+
  • cannot use power tools or 3D printing
  • must use available materials

We are incredibly proud of this team for the work they accomplished in such a short time. After finishing their prototype, they invited 3rd level and Upper El students as focus groups to test their game & provide feedback!

We've had a busy week!

- Students in DEL are working on their innovation projects-- visit www.globalgoals.org to learn more.

- 6th & 7th levels participated in a rapid prototyping session, making chairs our of paper, pipe cleaners and toothpicks

- we went on a field trip with Upper El to NJPAC to see a musical about the 'Freedom Riders.'

- finally, we showed off our Julius Caesar projects to younger students at Family Fun Night.

what's happening in middle school?

We were so busy this week, we didn't take any photos! But there's lots happening in Middle School, and we hope you join us for Family Fun Night on the 15th when we'll be showcasing much of our hard work on recent projects including....

  • Rube Goldberg Machines for STEM
  • Julius Ceasar projects for Humanities
  • UN Global Goals Innovation project for DEL
  • Disease Illustrations for Science

// kicking off 2018 in Middle School //

We are diving right in to new curriculum units across all subjects! Students in Art moved into painting, we built ecosystems in Science, and are working on Innovation in DEL with the UN Sustainable Development Goals. STEM folks are finishing up building Rube Goldberg machines!

Help our Middle School gather data!

Our middle school 'Charted Lands' project is working to create different maps of Jersey City. But we need your help! Please participate by taking two short surveys, linked below. (You can take the survey directly from this page!)

We can't wait to share the results!

// week of November 6th//

Things are cruising right along in Middle School! Students worked on videos in both Science and Humanities, and started a new DEL unit on mapping called 'Charted Lands.' We've begun working on our yearly balloon launch in STEM and have also made the leap to Spanish class being conducted solely in espanol!
